Kelly Brand Nextet: Sister Luna
"The Blue Note influence of the '60's is strongly felt on this
wonderful quintet release. Kelly gives us five new compositions and
thoughtful interpretations of My Funny Valentine and Chick Corea's difficult
standard, Tones for Jones Bones. The horns, Art Davis (trumpet) and
Louis Stockwell (tenor) always have something to say and the rhythm
section, anchored by bassist Kelly Sill is flawless. The drum chair
alternates between Eric Montzka and Tim Davis, both very strong players
about town. The original tunes are warm, well thought out
and reflect the
soul of a very nice composer. "
"Brand's more than capable
leadership is not limited to directing from the keyboard but in the
evocative brightness she creates for her compositions." -Jazz Times
"A fine young pianist who plays her own music with elegance and
sensitivity." -Marian McPartland

"Meanwhile, on A Dream in a Stone the Kelly Brand
Sextet approaches jazz composition from the sophisticated side of the
street. The pianist/leader constructs equally elaborate, listener-friendly
pieces that score points for poise and intellect." -Pulse
"As a pianist, Brand uses an unusual mix of stylistic elements.
She plays blunt sometimes Monkish ideas, but she has a polished attack
and an especially graceful touch." -Jazz at Ravinia
“an interesting relationship between energy and melody” - “attains a
dark warmth without sacrificing bite”
